A P Baskakov

I got to know Baskakov throughout mutual interest in fluidization, blowing gas through a bed of particles so that they bubble like a liquid.  Baskakov was an authority on heat transfer in fluidized beds, particularly when the particles are very hot, so that they glow red.  For such a hot bed, radiation to an immersed object, e.g. a boiler tube, becomes important.  Because of his distinguished background, Baskakov agreed to write a chapter in ‘Fluidization’, second edition, 1985, published by Academic Press.  His chapter is entitled ‘Radiative heat transfer in fluidized beds’.  The work stands to this day as an important source of information on radiative heat transfer in fluidized beds.  For this we are permanently indebted to A P Baskakov.
